Panaji, Goa – Tensions in Goa have reached a boiling point following controversial remarks made by Subhash Velingkar, a former leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), about the Catholic missionary St. Francis Xavier. Christian communities across the state have vehemently condemned Velingkar’s comments and are demanding his immediate arrest.
Protests erupted on Sunday, with demonstrators blocking national highways and demanding action against Velingkar. In North Goa, locals and political leaders staged a demonstration in Old Goa, calling for Velingkar’s arrest and urging like-minded individuals to join a larger protest in Margao.
The Christian community has accused Velingkar of inciting communal tensions with his remarks, which they believe are disrespectful and offensive to their faith. The protests have highlighted the deep-rooted religious sensitivities in the state and raised concerns about the potential for further unrest.
Political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have also weighed in on the issue, criticizing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the RSS for fostering communal tensions. Gandhi called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis and urged all parties to exercise restraint.
As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether the authorities will take action against Velingkar and whether the protests will escalate further. The incident has underscored the delicate nature of religious relations in Goa and the need for dialogue and understanding to prevent such conflicts from escalating into violence.
