The recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East serves as a stark reminder of the complex and often contentious issue of Israel and Palestine. While the international community grapples with political solutions, Christians must ground their understanding of this conflict in biblical truth.
The Bible unequivocally establishes God’s covenant with Abraham, promising the land of Canaan to his descendants. This divine promise, outlined in Genesis 15:17-21, extends from the River of Egypt to the Euphrates, encompassing a far greater territory than the current state of Israel.
Furthermore, Joshua 1:3-6 and Exodus 23:30-33 reaffirm this divine decree, emphasizing God’s intention for Israel to possess the land “from the River to the Sea.” These biblical passages leave no room for ambiguity regarding God’s intended boundaries for the Jewish people.
Let us heed the words of Isaiah 40:1, “Comfort, comfort My people, says your God” by extending a special gift that brings relief and hope to Israel’s people.
The covenant with Abraham is declared everlasting in Genesis 17:7-8, underscoring its enduring significance. The Bible explicitly warns against dividing this land, as seen in Joel 3:1-2, which states, “For behold, in those days and at that time, When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; And I will enter into judgment with them there On account of My people, My heritage Israel, Whom they have scattered among the nations; They have also divided up My land.” This passage highlights the grave sin of dividing the land promised to God’s chosen people.
Zechariah 12:3 further emphasizes this point, stating, “The Lord will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.” These verses serve as a sobering reminder of the divine consequences of opposing God’s will for Israel.
It is crucial to understand that standing with Israel is not merely a political stance; it is a biblical imperative. As Christians, we are called to uphold God’s word and recognize the historical and divine right of the Jewish people to their ancestral homeland.
While pursuing peace and reconciliation with the Palestinian people remains a vital goal, we must not compromise on biblical truth. The pursuit of a “two-state solution” that may involve the division of God-given land raises serious theological and moral concerns.
Let us pray for the peace of Jerusalem, recognizing that true and lasting peace can only be achieved through a solution that honors God’s promises and respects the historical and biblical rights of the Jewish people.
