A Voice for the Persecuted: Marco Rubio’s Nomination as Secretary of State Marks Historic Milestone for Religious Freedom

Marco Rubio Nominated as Secretary of State: A Defender of Religious Freedom on the Global Stage

Washington, D.C. – President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State has been hailed as a pivotal moment in Rubio’s distinguished public service career, marked by his steadfast defense of religious freedom and human rights. If confirmed, Rubio would be the first Latino to hold the nation’s highest diplomatic post, a role that comes with navigating complex global challenges and conflicts.

“Marco is a highly respected leader and a powerful voice for freedom. He will be a strong advocate for our nation, a true friend to our allies, and a fearless warrior who will never back down to our adversaries,” Trump announced on Wednesday.

“It is my great honour to announce that Senator Marco Rubio of Florida is hereby nominated to be The United States Secretary of State,” Trump said making a formal announcement in this regard.

Marco is a Highly Respected Leader, and a very powerful Voice for Freedom, he said.

“He will be a strong advocate for our nation, a true friend to our allies, and a fearless warrior who will never back down to our adversaries. I look forward to working with Marco to Make America, and the World, Safe and Great Again!” Trump said in his statement, which came soon after his meeting with outgoing President Joe Biden.

“I am honored by the trust President Trump has placed in me,” Rubio said in a Nov. 13 post on X. “As secretary of state, I will work every day to carry out his foreign policy agenda,” he continued. “Under the leadership of President Trump we will deliver peace through strength and always put the interests of Americans and America above all else.”

In an interview with EWTN News last week prior to his nomination, the Republican senator said he wants to turn the electoral mandate Trump received “into action so that it becomes a governing coalition in this country that allows us to actually get good things done for America.”

A Lifelong Commitment to Faith and Freedom

Rubio’s dedication to religious liberty is well-documented. The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio’s life journey has been deeply intertwined with his faith. From his childhood explorations of religion to his eventual return to Catholicism, his convictions have shaped his policy priorities.

As a senator, Rubio played a critical role in the reauthorization of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Speaking on its importance, Rubio emphasized, “Horrific events like the massacre of Nigerian Christians underscore the need for institutions like USCIRF. The fight for religious freedom is a fight for the dignity of all people.”

Global religious freedom advocates have applauded his nomination. Nadine Maenza, President of the International Religious Freedom Secretariat, commended Rubio’s leadership, saying, “Senator Rubio has consistently championed the rights of persecuted communities around the world. His nomination as Secretary of State is a testament to his commitment to advancing religious liberty.”

“Wonderful to learn Senator Marco Rubio has been nominated as Secretary of State!

We at IRF Secretariat are thankful for his strong and consistent voice to further religious freedom globally! In June, we awarded him as the top Notable Leader in the Senate based on his score with the International Religious Freedom (IRF) Congressional Scorecard that you can read here: https://irfscorecard.org/117th-key-takeaways/

We appreciated his leadership, and the work from his entire office, to reauthorize the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.

“This is one of the most important positions in the U.S. Government, and Senator Rubio is an excellent choice,” said Congresswoman Aumua Amata. “Senator Rubio has made foreign policy and national security an in-depth priority of his years in the Senate. As a son of Cuban immigrants, he deeply understands the realities of communism, the value of freedom, and the clear reasons the United States must maintain a strong commitment to the Pacific as a diplomatic counterweight to the activities of the CCP. I welcome this appointment; it increases my optimism about the next few years for U.S. policy in the Pacific. I hope the Senate sets aside all partisanship to confirm this nominee rapidly and send a message to the world of unity and strength in foreign affairs.”

Achievements in Advancing Religious Freedom

Rubio’s legislative record includes spearheading efforts to hold oppressive regimes accountable. He has been a leading voice against China’s atrocities against the Uyghurs, Tibetans, and Christians. Rubio has also condemned the persecution of Catholics in Nicaragua and Cuba, as well as religious minorities in Iran.

His work has garnered widespread recognition. In 2023, Rubio was honored by the IRF Congressional Scorecard as the top leader in the Senate for his contributions to religious freedom. His role in advocating for persecuted communities in Iraq and Syria, among other regions, has further solidified his reputation as a global advocate for human rights.

Navigating Challenges on the World Stage

If confirmed, Rubio will face a demanding international landscape. With conflicts involving U.S. allies escalating in the Middle East and tensions rising in the Asia-Pacific, his experience and diplomatic acumen will be critical. A staunch proponent of “peace through strength,” Rubio’s approach to foreign policy combines firm resolve with a commitment to dialogue.

According to Susan MacManus, a distinguished professor emerita at the University of South Florida, Rubio’s ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences sets him apart. “He listens, he articulates complex issues with authority, and he connects with people across the political spectrum,” she said.

A Turning Point for U.S. Diplomacy

Rubio’s nomination represents a blend of historic significance and substantive expertise. His personal story, legislative achievements, and vision for global diplomacy align with the challenges and opportunities of the current era. As the Senate prepares to confirm his appointment, Rubio’s advocates emphasize that his leadership could reinvigorate U.S. efforts to champion religious freedom and human rights on the global stage.

“Religious liberty is not just a fundamental right—it’s the foundation of free societies everywhere,” Rubio said in a recent statement. “As Secretary of State, I will work tirelessly to ensure this principle is upheld for all.”
