European Parliament Re-establishes Intergroup on Freedom of Religion or Belief

Brussels, Belgium – The European Parliament has taken a significant step to protect religious freedom by re-establishing the Intergroup on Freedom of Religion or Belief. This bipartisan initiative, co-chaired by Bert-Jan Ruissen (SGP, ECR) and Miriam Lexmann (EPP), aims to address the growing global threat to religious freedom.

The re-establishment of the intergroup comes at a time when religious persecution is on the rise worldwide. A recent letter signed by various civil society organizations and religious groups highlighted the alarming increase in attacks on individuals based on their faith. The letter cited specific cases of persecution in countries like Nigeria, India, Algeria, Iraq, Iran, and Pakistan.

The intergroup will play a crucial role in raising awareness about these issues, advocating for the rights of religious minorities, and urging the European Union to take concrete action. Key priorities for the intergroup include:

  • Appointing a new EU envoy for religious freedom: This will ensure continued diplomatic efforts to protect religious freedom globally.
  • Prioritizing religious freedom in EU foreign policy: The intergroup will work with EU diplomats to address religious persecution in their diplomatic engagements.
  • Supporting civil society organizations: The intergroup will collaborate with NGOs working to protect religious freedom and provide them with necessary support.
  • Advocating for legislative and policy changes: The intergroup will push for legislation and policies that promote religious freedom and protect persecuted individuals.

The re-establishment of the Intergroup on Freedom of Religion or Belief is a positive development that sends a strong message about the European Union’s commitment to human rights and religious freedom. By working together, the European Parliament and civil society organizations can make a significant impact in addressing the challenges faced by religious minorities around the world.
