Labour MP David Smith Appointed UK Special Envoy for Religious Freedom
The UK government has named Labour MP David Smith as its new Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB), a move welcomed by faith-based organizations as a significant step in addressing global religious persecution.
Smith, the MP for North Northumberland and a devout Christian, expressed his gratitude and commitment to the role. “I am absolutely delighted and honoured to take on this position,” he said. “I look forward to advancing the Government’s commitment to supporting freedom of religion or belief for all.”
In his new role, Smith will focus on promoting religious freedom worldwide, with a particular emphasis on combating persecution based on faith. His appointment comes after months of uncertainty following the departure of Fiona Bruce, who held the role from December 2020 to July 2024. Concerns had grown over whether the position would be reinstated, particularly after Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner stated in November that “envoy roles are under consideration.”
The announcement was celebrated by Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), which has long advocated for greater UK involvement in addressing religious discrimination. Dr. Caroline Hull, ACN UK’s national director, described the role as “of the utmost importance,” emphasizing the UK’s ability to leverage its global influence to combat intolerance.
“We are delighted that the government has appointed a new Special Envoy for FoRB,” Dr. Hull said. “This position is essential to ensuring that persecution, discrimination, and intolerance are tackled wherever they arise.”
Smith brings extensive experience to the role, having worked with faith groups globally and served in organizations such as the Bible Society. Reflecting on his past work, he stated: “From sub-Saharan Africa to the Middle East and Asia, I have personally worked with those of different faiths who face religious persecution. These are issues I care passionately about.”
The need for such a role is underscored by ACN UK’s recent research, which revealed that religious persecution has increased by 60% in surveyed countries. In November, Catholic MP Sir Edward Leigh raised this issue during Prime Minister’s Questions, urging the government to reappoint a Special Envoy for FoRB before Christmas.
Responding to Smith’s appointment, Lord Collins of Highbury, Minister for Human Rights, called it “a clear signal of the value placed by the UK on championing freedom of religion or belief for all around the world.”
As Smith steps into the role, faith-based organizations and political leaders alike have expressed hope that his leadership will strengthen global efforts to protect religious freedoms and ensure that those facing persecution are not forgotten.
