Friedrich Naumann Foundation Honors Vladimir Kara-Murza with 2024 Freedom Prize

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has awarded its 2024 Freedom Prize to Vladimir Vladimirovich Kara-Murza, recognizing his lifelong dedication to human rights and democracy in Russia.

According to the FNF: Kara-Murza, a journalist and political activist, has shown exceptional courage in his commitment to freedom, repeatedly risking his life and freedom to promote democratic values in Russia.

As one of the most influential advocates of the Magnitsky Act, Kara-Murza played a critical role in pushing for legislation that enables the United States to hold those responsible for human rights abuses in Russia and beyond accountable. Passed in 2014, this law marked a significant step in combating international human rights violations, thanks largely to his advocacy and support.

Kara-Murza’s tireless efforts have not come without personal sacrifice. In Russia, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, the longest sentence for a political prisoner in the country’s modern history, highlighting the Russian government’s determination to suppress his work. Despite threats to his health and multiple attempts to intimidate and silence him, Kara-Murza has continued his fight undeterred, setting a powerful example of resilience and courage.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation emphasizes that in awarding Kara-Murza, it also recognizes the courage of his family, friends, and allies, along with the many Russians who stand up for liberal values and human rights despite the dangers involved. Through his statements and journalistic work, Kara-Murza has raised awareness about the realities of life in Russia and the abuses of power within its leadership, while also envisioning a path to a democratic and free Russia.

In addition to his work as a journalist and advocate, Kara-Murza has held key leadership roles within Russia’s opposition movements and has continued this work in exile, remaining an influential voice for Russian democracy on the global stage. His ongoing efforts, even in the face of severe repression, have educated people worldwide about the human rights situation in Russia and provided hope for a democratic future.
