Hungary’s commitment to aiding persecuted Christians in the Middle East was reaffirmed during a solidarity visit to Beirut by Tristan Azbej, Hungary’s State Secretary for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and head of the Hungary Helps program.
Azbej announced the delivery of 3.5 tonnes of humanitarian aid during a meeting with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai, a prominent spiritual leader regarded as a unifying figure in Lebanon’s ongoing struggle with political and economic crises. The aid package, coordinated by Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defense, included food, medicine, camp beds, blankets, and generators to improve living conditions for Christian communities.
“Middle Eastern Christians can always count on us,” Azbej declared, highlighting Hungary’s steadfast commitment to supporting vulnerable Christian populations in Lebanon and Syria.
A Unique Commitment in the West
During their meeting, Patriarch Rai expressed gratitude for Hungary’s direct assistance, noting that many Western countries with Christian roots have neglected Middle Eastern churches during times of persecution and crisis. He described Hungary as a rare ally and urged the Hungarian government to mediate between Western nations and Lebanese Christian leaders.
“This partnership could bring historic hope to every person living in Lebanon,” Patriarch Rai said. He also announced plans to visit Hungary next year to strengthen cooperation further.
A Lifeline for Lebanon
Azbej emphasized that Hungary views Lebanon’s stability as essential to the broader Middle Eastern region. “We remain committed to helping innocent victims of conflict and to supporting Christian communities,” he said. The humanitarian shipment was part of Hungary’s broader efforts to provide aid through programs like Hungary Helps, which partners with faith-based organizations, including the Baptist Aid Service and the Order of Malta Charity.
