India: Rise in Anti-Christian Violence Sparks Concern

New Delhi, India – A recent report by the United Christian Forum (UCF) has revealed a disturbing trend of increasing violence and discrimination against Christians in India. The organization’s “Violence Monitor Report 2024” documented a significant spike in incidents, including physical attacks, intimidation, and property damage, targeting Christian communities across the country.

According to the report, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh emerged as hotspots for anti-Christian violence, with the highest number of reported incidents. The data also highlights the vulnerability of marginalized groups within the Christian community, such as Dalits and tribal Christians, who were disproportionately targeted.

The rise in anti-Christian violence coincides with the increasing influence of Hindu nationalist groups in India. Critics argue that the government’s inaction and, in some cases, complicity, have emboldened these groups to target religious minorities.

A.C. Michael, the National Coordinator of the UCF, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation for Christians in India. He highlighted the alarming increase in violence, particularly the targeting of pastors and the misuse of conversion laws to harass and intimidate Christian communities.

The UCF report underscores the urgent need for effective measures to protect religious minorities in India. It calls for swift action from law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of violence, as well as for the government to take steps to promote religious tolerance and harmony.
