Washington, D.C. – Pepperdine University and the Religious Freedom Institute (RFI) have announced a new partnership to promote and defend religious freedom in the U.S. and globally. This collaboration was formalized on September 9, with the signing of an agreement by RFI President David Trimble and Danny DeWalt, Vice President and Chief of Staff at Pepperdine University.
“Religious freedom is essential to the foundation of a free society. A society that allows its people to worship freely will see them flourish in all areas of life,” stated Pepperdine President Jim Gash. “We are excited to partner with RFI in advancing religious freedom both on campuses and around the world.”
David Trimble highlighted the deepening relationship between RFI and Pepperdine, acknowledging that although they have collaborated in the past, this partnership marks a new phase. “The threats to religious freedom today are immense, and this partnership will empower us to address them more effectively. The late Ken Starr envisioned this collaboration, and I am honored to see his vision realized,” Trimble said.
Pepperdine, a Christian university known for its academic excellence and commitment to Christian values, aims to shape students for lives of service and leadership. The university’s dedication to religious freedom stems from its Christian identity. Similarly, RFI works to establish religious liberty as a fundamental human right, believing that it is crucial for societal success, security, and human flourishing.
In today’s world, religious freedom faces increasing challenges, particularly in cultural, political, and legal spheres. Education, however, is key to addressing these threats. Both institutions believe that educating future leaders in the principles of human dignity and religious rights is essential to restoring religious freedom in America and securing respect for it worldwide.
Moving forward, Pepperdine and RFI plan to engage in joint research, create innovative programs, and offer training to further global religious freedom. Together, they aim to provide a strong voice advocating for the fundamental human right of seeking ultimate meaning and truth, ensuring that all people can do so freely.
