Archbishop John Wilson of Southwark has condemned the widespread neglect of Christian persecution, urging all followers of Christ to stand united with those suffering for their faith. In an interview with Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), the archbishop emphasized the importance of supporting and defending persecuted Christians, regardless of their circumstances.
“It is a great sadness that the persecution of Christians around the world is often overlooked,” Archbishop Wilson stated. “As followers of Christ, we have a duty to each other. We must speak out and defend our persecuted brothers and sisters, not only as a matter of justice but also as a demonstration of spiritual and practical solidarity.”
During his recent visit to Nigeria, Archbishop Wilson was deeply moved by the unwavering faith of the people he encountered. He highlighted that the power of the Cross and the Resurrection can sustain even those facing the most challenging trials.
The archbishop noted that the history of Christianity is marked by persecution, yet the Church continues to flourish due to the enduring power of Christ’s resurrection. He emphasized the importance of never taking religious freedoms for granted, particularly in light of the experiences of persecuted Christians.
Archbishop Wilson expressed his pride in the diversity of his archdiocese and the genuine Catholic spirit it embodies. He stressed that many of his parishioners come from countries where persecution is a reality and that learning from their experiences can help us appreciate and protect our own freedoms.
The archbishop concluded by commending ACN’s advocacy work and calling for united solidarity in defense of religious freedom as a fundamental expression of human dignity.
