Baku, December 24 (AZERTAC) – President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan has underscored the significant role of the Christian community in Azerbaijani society in a letter to Pope Francis on the occasion of Christmas.
“The Christian community holds a distinctive place in modern Azerbaijani society. Our Christian citizens, who have settled in Azerbaijan and lived here as a family for hundreds of years, play a significant role in the public, political, social, and cultural life of our homeland, contributing greatly to the prosperity of our beloved country,” President Aliyev wrote.
Azerbaijan’s Commitment to Religious Heritage
The president highlighted Azerbaijan’s dedication to preserving its ancient Christian heritage, noting that Christian shrines, churches, and other places of worship are safeguarded equally alongside mosques and synagogues. He added that Azerbaijan also plays an active role in protecting Christian monuments of global cultural significance, promoting intercultural dialogue on the international stage.
Strengthening Ties with the Holy See
President Aliyev expressed satisfaction with the strong and growing relationship between Azerbaijan and the Holy See. He pointed to frequent reciprocal visits and ongoing collaborations as evidence of the close bilateral ties.
“I am pleased to note the upcoming construction of a second Catholic church in our country, to be built in honor of Pope John Paul II,” Aliyev said. “This project demonstrates great attention and care toward our country’s Catholic community and symbolizes the high level of relations between Azerbaijan and the Holy See.”
Religious Harmony as a Pillar of Society
President Aliyev’s message highlights Azerbaijan’s unique model of multiculturalism and interfaith harmony, where diverse religious communities coexist peacefully. The letter to Pope Francis not only reflects Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering religious freedom but also emphasizes its broader efforts to contribute to global cultural and interreligious dialogue.
