KARACHI: U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome concluded a two-day visit to Karachi on Wednesday, during which he emphasized Washington’s dedication to promoting religious freedoms, civil rights, and economic collaboration. His visit included meetings with key government officials, business leaders, and human rights advocates, reflecting the United States’ broader commitment to advancing shared values and mutual prosperity with Pakistan.
Engagement on Human Rights
Ambassador Blome met with officials of the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC), where he reiterated U.S. support for safeguarding the rights of all Pakistani citizens. “The United States stands with Pakistan in its pursuit to protect the rights of all its citizens,” he stated.
SHRC Chairman Iqbal Ahmed provided the ambassador with an in-depth briefing on critical human rights challenges in Sindh, including issues affecting religious minorities, the transgender community, child marriages, and gender-based violence. He outlined the commission’s efforts, which include offering legal aid, counseling, and collaboration with government departments to address human rights violations.
Sukhdev Hemnani, a minority member of the SHRC, shared his personal experiences handling cases involving religious minorities, providing insights into the commission’s grassroots initiatives. Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister on Human Rights, Rajvir Singh Sodha, also highlighted government measures to empower minority groups, including their inclusion in political processes.
“The visit underscored SHRC’s commitment to fostering international cooperation to achieve shared human rights goals,” the commission stated in its press release.

During a dinner with business leaders, he emphasized the importance of open markets and mutual prosperity. “The United States is committed to supporting Pakistan’s economic development. Our mutual prosperity depends on free, open, competitive markets where trade and investment can thrive,” he said.
In meetings with Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori and Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, the ambassador discussed expanding trade, investment, and economic opportunities in the province. The discussions aimed to enhance bilateral cooperation in key sectors, creating jobs and fostering sustainable growth.
Educational and Environmental Initiatives
As part of his visit, Ambassador Blome engaged in community-focused initiatives. At the Clifton Urban Forest and the U.S.-Pakistan Friendship Garden, he planted neem and moringa trees, reinforcing the importance of environmental sustainability and U.S.-Pakistan cooperation.
At the Network of Organisations Working for People with Disabilities Pakistan (NOWPDP), a U.S.-supported program, the ambassador highlighted the transformative power of education. “Education transforms lives, and we are proud to support programs that promote freedom, dignity, and equality for all,” he said.
