Vigil in Lahore to pay tribute to Shaheed Salmaan Taseer

A candlelight vigil was held this evening (Monday) at Liberty Roundabout in Gulberg, Lahore, in remembrance of Shaheed Salmaan Taseer. The vigil was led by Ms. Jahanara M Wattoo, the head of social media and provincial leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab. Members of the Peoples Youth Organization (PYO), Peoples Students Federation (PSF), Peoples Labour Wing, Human Rights Wing, and various civil society representatives were also in attendance. Salmaan Taseer’s family participated in the vigil as well.

In her address, Ms. Jahanara M Wattoo paid heartfelt tribute to Shaheed Salmaan Taseer, expressing gratitude to civil society and all allied wings of the PPP, including Social Media Punjab, Human Rights Wing, PYO, PSF, and the Minorities Wing, for their courageous participation in the vigil. She commended Shaheed Salmaan Taseer for his unwavering stand against religious extremism and fundamentalism, and for his enduring support of the rights of religious minorities.

She stated that the vigil was organized under the direction of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. She described Salmaan Taseer as a courageous man who never hesitated to raise his voice for the oppressed, especially advocating for women and minority rights. She emphasized that individuals like Shaheed Salmaan Taseer stood for the rights of minorities and marginalized communities, sacrificing his life in the pursuit of an enlightened and liberal society. He had the bravery to confront the religious fanaticism that has eroded the tolerant fabric of our society. Salmaan Taseer will always be remembered for his dignity, enlightenment, integrity, and sacrifices for humanity, she added.

MNA Shazia Atta Marri, Barrister Amir Hassan, Asif Khan, Naseer Ahmed, Sohail Malik, Junaid Qaiser, Syed Ahsan Abbas Rizvi, Shahzaib Karim and others also spoke on the occasion and paid glowing tribute to Shaheed Salmaan Taseer.

MNA Shazia Atta Marri has said that the extremists have negative agenda and they want to impose their own thoughts at gunpoint. The PPP would not allow them to ruin the society. She has demanded that national action plan must be implemented in it true spirit, so future generation would live in a peaceful Pakistan.

The candle vigil participants were carrying banners and placards bearing inscriptions “Say No to Terrorism”, “Stay United Against Terrorism”, “Raise Your Voice Against Terrorism”, and “Dehshat Gardo Ka Jo Yar Hai Ghdar Hai Ghdar Hai”.

The participants also chanted slogans against terrorists.
